HOMES FOR YOUR BUNNY!

Unfortunately, the cheap bunny starter kit houses that are often seen in pet stores aren’t sufficient bunny houses.

The recommended cage width should be at least one and a half times the length of the full grown bunny, and the cage length should be at least 3 times the length of the bunny. Or another way to determine what size cage to get is to use the formula: one square foot per rabbit pound for a small rabbit and two square feet per rabbit pound for a large rabbit. Listed below are some examples of the different types of housing options for your rabbits.

Indoor Rabbit Cages

It’s recommended to keep your rabbit indoors as they usually live longer and are more sociable. Our friends at Logans Lops Rabbitry personalized their rabbitry into a beautiful room. Take a look at their website at the link above, or follow them on their Instagram @Logans Lops. Outdoor bunnies are more susceptible to temperature and weather changes, predators, mites, etc. and may be more skittish. If there is limited room indoors, make sure your bunny can visit the outdoors often in order to exercise and play. Stackable cages are highly favored for indoor rabbits.

Outdoor Rabbit Hutches

The advantage of having an outdoor rabbit hutch is that they’re easier to clean, and generally the rabbit will have more space to run around. Outdoor rabbit houses should not be placed in direct sunlight or direct drafts. They should also be away from areas of dampness, humidity, and not subject to extreme temperature conditions or loud noises. Do make sure to put them in well ventilated areas. Ensure that the bunny house has a roof so that the bunny will be sufficiently protected should it start to rain. The cage should also be secure enough that predators such as cats and dogs are unable to attack the bunny.

DIY Rabbit Cages / Rabbit Hutch

If you have the woodworking skills and a nearby hardware store you also have the option of building your own hutch. The image above is taken from this site here. There are also tutorials on YouTube for your perusal.

Premade Bunny Cages / Hutches

You could also purchase premade bunny cages. The ones I have are locally built by Trisha Broley and her husband. They are customizable and comfortably fit Holland Lops. Prices are subject to change so for more information please contact her at her email: lavarockrabbits@gmail.com or you can visit her page here
